Universal Design for Learning

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a set of principles for curriculum development that gives all individuals equal opportunities to learn.

According to the National Center for Universal Design for Learning , UDL provides a blueprint for creating instructional goals, methods, materials, and assessments that work for everyone – not a single, one-size-fits-all solution but rather flexible approaches that can be customized and adjusted for individual needs.

A cornerstone concept in UDL is presenting information in:

  • Multiple means of representation
  • Multiple means of action and expression
  • Multiple means of engagement

UDL principles can be incorporated into any course and benefits all enrolled students. We recommend UDL On Campus: Universal Design for Learning in Higher Education when getting started with implementing UDL in your course.
